Nowadays, the increasingly extreme climate has urged us to accelerate the development of efficient and mature technologies for obtaining energy, fuel and even materials from renewable resources, such as biomass-the only carbon-based renewables. This proposal is a joint cooperative research allowing the enhancement/advance in the fundamental knowledge on bioenergy/ biofuels and byproducts (carbon materials) production processes from the pyrolysis/gasification of biomass and wastes through experiments and modeling. It will include tests in engines, process integration in biorefineries and hybrid systems and sustainability evaluation through Life Cycle Assessment. The new findings from the cooperative fundamental study will also lead to establishment of pilot-scale plants demonstrating green and efficient conversion of biomass in BRICS. The overall objective of the project includes: a) Production of bio-oil from various biomass and wastes via thermal conversion with byproducts (carbon materials) preparations. b) Upgrading of primary bio-oil to biofuel to meet the desired fuel quality of advanced engines. c) Synthesis of CO2 into biofuel. d) Study of performance and emission characteristics of internal combustion engines / vehicles fueled with biofuels derived from different main feedstocks. e) Modelling and simulation study including the production of bioenergy/biofuel and the optimal biomass dispatch in hybrid renewables energy systems for BRICS countries. f) Life cycle analysis of different biomass / bio-waste to screen sustainable biofuels, and the supply chain of sustainable sources for electricity generation. g) To compile key points to strengthen specific biomass / biofuel/bioenergy program in BRICS countries by exchanging research / technology information among partner's country. On successful completion of the project work, the main outcomes include the development of highly-efficient technology using biomass and wastes for the productions of valuable multi-products (particularly 2nd/3rd generation of biofuels), the establishment of international research team with the involvement of all BRICS countries, which will certainly position BRICS countries in a leading technological role in the relevant area.
